Whoa. Playboy!

Thanks to my agent, I have sold a story to Playboy. Playboy!

When I was growing up, I would read every article in Playboy, every word. Also, I would appreciate the photography. Often. Interesting fact – when you sell a story to Playboy, everyone makes one of two jokes:  the first goes something like “now I’ll have a reason to READ Playboy!”; and the second is, “you’re gonna be in Playboy? They must really be desperate for centerfolds.”

My editor greeted me with this message, “Welcome to the Playboy fiction writers club—a pretty exclusive and notable group of authors. We’re happy to play host to your talents and to be publishing ‘The Domestic Lives of Superheroes’ in the upcoming issue of Playboy magazine.”

Some authors who have appeared in Playboy? Ian Fleming, Truman Capote, Lawrence Durrell, James T. Farrell, Allen Ginsberg, Le Roi Jones, Arthur Miller, Henry Miller, Norman Podhoretz, Georges Simenon, Isaac Bashevis Singer, William Styron.

But wait! There’s more. Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury. Stephen Fucking King. Isaac Frickin’ Asimov!

Even more:

  • Joseph Heller
  • Roald Dahl
  • Gabriel García Márquez
  • Margaret Atwood
  • Haruki Murakami
  • Norman Mailer
  • John Cheever
  • Chuck Palahniuk
  • Hunt S. Thompson

Oh, and don’t forget, JOHN UPDIKE.

Which brings me to the story I wrote. It was a homage to the 1960s Updike, especially his novel Couples, which is rife with swinging, extra-martial affairs, and the minutiae of domestic life. It’s called “The Domestic Lives of Superheroes” and it’s not too bad if I say so myself.

Anyway, I was down at the end of last year on the writing front, depressed at the future (Trump and Republican controlled house and senate), and then this news came in and perked me right up.
